Importance of Patient education according Abadan nursing students’ opinions

  Background and Aim : Patient education as an important role of nurses doesn’t be performed very well for various reasons. The aim of this study is evaluation the importance of patient education according nursing students’ opinions.

  Materials and Methods : In this cross sectional study, all nursing students in Abadan Nursing faculty were evaluated. Data were collected using a four part questionnaire including: demographic data, importance of patient education (16 question), barriers, and approaches of education (10 questions in each domain).

  Results: Results showed that mean age was 20.39 ± 3.53, and academic GPA was 15.80. 75% of students absolutely agreed with patient education. 64.1% believed that patient education is a primary role of nurses. Most of students (59.4 %) mentioned lack of patients’ physical preparedness was as a barrier and 65.6% expressed knowledge of educator as a facilitator in patient teaching. 

  Conclusion: Providing appropriate conditions including: environment, time, and teaching tool, also improvement of theoretic and clinical knowledge of educators can enhance clinical education in nursing and in turn improve nursing situation in society.
