Nurses' knowledge of body mechanic in educational hospital of Birjand, Iran

  Background and Aim: Back pain is a major concern in societies: Studies have reported that back pain in nurses has an annual prevalence of 40-50% and lifetime prevalence of 35-80%. Some directions have been recommended for prevention: practice for correct postures, body mechanic, lifting with proper techniques. The purposes of this study were to determine knowledge of nursing about body mechanic on work.

  Method and Material: In this descriptive analytic study 127 nurses of Birjand university hospitals were selected. Data was collected with a questionnaire with two part (demographic and knowledge questions). Content validity was confirmed and reliability accepted with a kronback (a=0.7). Level of knowledge was

  categorized to three levels: weak, moderate and good. Correlation between demographic data with level of knowledge Gnd back pain were tested with chi-square, t.

  Results: Among participants 107 person were women. 48% reported that they had back pain and 26% of them related to low back pain. Knowledge of majority of nurses were weak or moderate (25.2% and 55.9% respectively). Significant relationship was observed between level of knowledge with educational level and back pain with marital status, absence of work, more years worked and more daily worked.


 

  Conclusion: Result of this study showed that knowledge of majority of nurses was weak or moderate.

  According to side effects of back pain, we suggested that body mechanic skills must be teached for hospital

  workers.
